Meet comedian Carolyn Castiglia who is rehearsed and ready to “aMuse” you.

Carolyn Castiglia is a stand-up comedian you may recognize from her television appearances on Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, HLN, NickMom, Lifetime, fyi, WE tv and more. Or from the thousands of live performances she’s given here in our great city of New York. She lives in Brooklyn with her 13-year-old daughter and their very handsome cat.

Don’t miss this special evening of poets and comedians trading true-life tales!

Meet “A Muse” Storyteller Pichchenda Bao

Tuesday! Arrive at The Astoria Bookshop early to grab a seat (and wine!) and stories start at 7 pm SHARP. Rehearsals begin tomorrow but first, meet “aMuse” storyteller Pichchenda Bao.

Pichchenda Bao is a writer and poet. Born at the end of the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, she was an infant when her mother carried her across the Thai border. She and her parents arrived in the United States as refugees. Now she lives, writes, and raises her two young children in New York City. Her work has been published by Newtown Literary, the Stilt House zine, and great weather for MEDIA, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She is a 2019 Aspen Words emerging writer fellow.

Meet “A Muse” Storyteller Ellie Dvorkin

Second story meeting for No, YOU Tell It! “a Muse” is tonight! The full group is coming back together to workshop each other’s revisions in preparation for next week’s Brooklyn Book Festival event at The Astoria Bookshop. First, let’s meet our next aMUSEr, comedian Ellie Dvorkin.

Ellie Dvorkin is an actor/writer/host who is best known as one half of the hilarious comedy music duo “Mel & El”. Hailed as “outrageous” by The New York Times and “ready for prime time” by The New York Post, Mel & El have brought down the house at Joe’s Pub, Ars Nova, Gotham Comedy Club, Upright Citizen’s Brigade, 92Y, and onboard Atlantis gay cruises. These days, El’s bathroom humor can be seen/read on MomCaveTV, but it is most appreciated by her five-year-old son Charlie, who loves to talk about butts. Meet “A Muse” Storyteller H.E. Fisher

Wonderful first story meeting this week for our upcoming #BKBF event. Time to meet our first aMUSEr  H.E. Fisher!

H.E. Fisher is a cross-genre writer, whose work has appeared or is forthcoming in, Okay Donkey, Pithead Chapel, Tiny Flames Press, The Rumpus, The Hopper, JMWW, Hip Mama, among other publications. She is the 2019 recipient of The Stark Poetry Prize in Memory of Raymond Patterson, and was shortlisted for the 2019 Barren Press Poetry Contest. H.E. is pursuing her MFA in Creative Writing at City College of New York. She lives in Rockland County, New York. She can be found at: hefisher.com and twitter.com/HE_Fisher_.

Join us at The Astoria Bookshop for this special BKBF Bookend event! FREE. We are bringing poets and stand-ups together to develop their nonfiction stories inspired by the theme “aMuse” on the page.

BKBF Bookend Event

Summer’s flying by but we have a reason to be super excited for September.

Save the date for No, YOU Tell It! “aMuse” on September 17th at The Astoria Bookshop. THIS IS AN OFFICIAL 2019 BROOKLYN BOOK FESTIVAL EVENT.

For this special BKBF Bookend event, we are bringing poets and stand-ups together to develop their nonfiction stories inspired by the theme “aMuse” on the page. Then trade their true-life tales on stage.

Oh, What a Night!

4 storytellers, 3 creative team members, 2 story workshops to develop the pieces on the page, 1 personalized rehearsal session with each storyteller to help them embody their partner’s story on stage = an invigorating evening of “Snapped!” stories last night.

Huge thanks to Lambda Literary for helping us bring this special night of Queer Storytelling with a Twist to Dixon Place. Happy Pride all!!

Meet “Snapped!” Storyteller Kent D. Wolf

Our “Snapped!” show is tonight. Join us In the Lounge at Dixon Place at 7 pm for drinks. Stories start right at 7:30. First, meet our final storyteller Kent D. Wolf.

Kent D. Wolf is an agent with The Friedrich Agency, representing literary fiction and narrative nonfiction–from novels to story collections to immersive journalism to personal essays. His clients include National Book Award for Fiction Finalist Carmen Maria Machado, New York Times Bestselling essayist Samantha Irby, Barnes & Noble Discover novelist Ingrid Rojas Contreras, and New York Times Notable novelist Martin Seay, among others.

Meet “Snapped!” Storyteller Naomi Gordon-Loebl

Rehearsals are underway! The storytellers have flipped scripts and are now working with a NYTI director to add a little oomph to their partner’s piece for tomorrow night’s “Snapped!” show at Dixon Place.

Meet our next storyteller Lambda Literary fellow Naomi Gordon-Loebl!

Naomi Gordon-Loebl is a writer, educator, and fellow at Type Media Center. Her work has been published in The New York Times, Harper’s, The Nation, Complex, Hazlitt, The Washington Spectator, The Toast, the anthologies The Social Construction of Difference and Inequality and Emerge, and elsewhere. She is the recipient of residencies and fellowships from Lambda Literary, Monson Arts, and the Vermont Studio Center. Before working in journalism, she spent five years as a teacher and youth development professional, helping people who had left school to complete their high school equivalency diplomas. She was born, raised, and still lives in Brooklyn.

Meet “Snapped!” Storyteller Robb Leigh Davis

Stunning second story meeting last night. Hearing the storytellers read each other’s revised drafts out loud was a thrilling reminder of what an honor it is to take part in Lambda Literary’s mission to help amplify LGBTQ voices at a time when the world needs them more than ever.

Robb Leigh Davis is a writer/performer, residing in Brooklyn. He is creator of the performance series Meditation on a Theme (www.meditationonatheme.com), co-creator of the podcast Takin U Back, and has worked extensively with the NYC Department of Education overseeing arts education across the five boroughs.

Commissioned for performance pieces by Brooklyn College, he has performed as part of the National Network for Education Renewal Conferences in CT and TX, and was a selected playwright for the Tectonic Theater Project’s LGBT Theater Artists of Color Training Lab. A featured performer – in partnership with Brooklyn College/GLARE (GLBTQ Advocacy in Research &Education) – at the 18th Annual Shepard Symposium on Social Justice in Laramie, Wyoming, his plays include The Homosexual Agenda, The Glam Factor, We The People and AMERICANBLACKOUT (originated at Dixon Place HOT! Festival and the NY Fringe Festival).

He is the former Director of Arts & Culture for the LGBT Center of NYC, and as a playwright/essayist continues to create work at the intersection of spirituality, sexuality and racial identity.
